Sales Role Play: 10 Scenarios Every Rep Needs to Practice
The fastest way to close more deals isn't reading about sales. It's rehearsing until the objections feel routine.
Why Role Play is the Cheat Code Most Reps Skip
It Removes Surprise
When you've rehearsed the hard objections 50 times, they stop feeling threatening on a real call.
Muscle Memory Beats Improvisation
Top athletes don't improvise under pressure. They execute the reps they put in at practice.
Real Feedback Accelerates Learning
Video review and peer feedback reveal blind spots that self-reflection never catches.
10 Sales Role Play Scenarios Every Rep Must Practice
The Price Is Too High
Scenario Setup
Prospect says: 'This is more than we budgeted for.'
Sample Script
That's a fair concern. Can I ask — is it the total number, or the monthly commitment that feels off? [pause] Most teams find that once they factor in [specific outcome], the ROI lands around [X]. Would it help if I walked you through how other [industry] companies justified this investment internally?
The 'I Need to Think About It' Stall
Scenario Setup
Prospect says: 'We're not ready to move forward just yet.'
Sample Script
Of course — I'd never want you to rush a decision. Can I ask what specifically you'd want to get clarity on? I'd rather help you think it through now than leave you with open questions.
The Competitor Comparison
Scenario Setup
Prospect says: 'We're also looking at [Competitor].'
Sample Script
Smart to compare. What's attracting you to them specifically? [listen] Most of our customers looked at them too — here's what they told us made the difference: [specific differentiator]. Does that change the picture at all?
The 'Send Me Some Information' Brush-Off
Scenario Setup
Prospect deflects to email instead of committing to next steps.
Sample Script
Happy to send something over. So I don't send a 20-page document you'll never open — what's the one thing you'd most want it to answer? And if it answered that, what would the next step look like?
The Cold Opener (Outbound Call)
Scenario Setup
First 15 seconds of a cold call — prospect answers, unfamiliar with you.
Sample Script
Hey [Name], this is [Your Name] — I'll be upfront, this is a cold call. I'll keep it under 30 seconds and you can hang up if it's not relevant. I work with [role] at [type of company] who are trying to [goal]. Is that even a problem you're dealing with right now?
The Multi-Stakeholder Objection
Scenario Setup
Prospect says: 'I need to run this by my [manager / CFO / team] first.'
Sample Script
Totally get it — who else would typically weigh in on a decision like this? I'd hate for them to kill a deal over a misunderstanding. Would it be useful if we set up a 20-minute call with them included so I can answer questions directly?
The Discovery Call (No Pain Found Yet)
Scenario Setup
Early discovery — prospect hasn't shared a clear problem yet.
Sample Script
Let me ask it this way — if you close out this quarter and look back, what's the one thing that, if it had gone differently, would have made the biggest difference? [pause] That's usually where the real conversation starts.
The End-of-Quarter Push
Scenario Setup
You need to close this month. Prospect is warm but not urgent.
Sample Script
I want to be straight with you — I have a deadline this month that could benefit you too. If we move forward by [date], I can lock in [specific incentive: price / onboarding / bonus]. After that I can't guarantee it. Is there anything that would prevent us from moving forward before then?
The Champion Re-Engagement
Scenario Setup
A deal went quiet 60 days ago. You're following up cold.
Sample Script
Hey [Name], I know it's been a while — I won't pretend the timing worked out last time. I've been thinking about what you said about [specific pain]. We just released [new feature / outcome]. Is this a better time to revisit, or has something changed on your end?
The Closing Call
Scenario Setup
Prospect has seen the demo, received the proposal, and gone quiet.
Sample Script
I don't want to be the person who keeps sending 'just checking in' emails. So I'll be direct: based on everything we've covered, do you see this solving the problem you described? [pause] If yes, the next step is [specific action]. If something's changed, I'd rather know now. Which is it?
How to Run an Effective Role Play Session
Five steps. Twenty minutes. Run this every week and your objection handling will be unrecognisable in 90 days.
Don't try to rehearse everything at once. Pick the objection that's costing you the most deals right now.
Use your phone or a call recorder. You can't improve what you can't review.
First rep is awareness. Second is refinement. Third is execution.
Kill your ego for 5 minutes. What did you actually say vs. what you thought you said?
Ask a peer or manager to watch 2 minutes and give you one thing to fix. One, not ten.
The Role Play Mistake That Keeps Most Reps Average
Most reps role-play the scenarios they're already comfortable with. The ones who close more practice the conversations they've been avoiding — the tough price objection, the hostile gatekeeper, the champion who went cold. Discomfort in practice means confidence in the field.
