Sales Tips for Beginners
20 things every new salesperson needs to know — from your first cold call to your first closed deal.
Why Most Beginners Struggle
Sales is one of the few careers where you can go from zero to top performer in under a year — if you learn the right things in the right order. Most beginners struggle not because they lack talent, but because they make the same three mistakes.
They Talk Too Much
Nervous energy leads to feature dumps. Buyers buy when they feel heard, not lectured.
They Fear Rejection
Every no is data, not failure. Top reps hear 100 nos for every yes — and they're fine with that.
They Skip the Basics
Fancy tactics fail without fundamentals. Prospects can smell inexperience; process hides it.
The 20 Tips
Grouped into four areas: mindset, prospecting, discovery & demo, and closing. Each tip includes a beginner script you can use from day one.
Section 1: Mindset
Tips 1–5Treat every call as practice, not high-stakes.
The pressure new reps feel on early calls is self-imposed. Every call is a rep — a chance to sharpen your script, improve your delivery, and get comfortable with silence. The reps who improve fastest are the ones who detach from outcomes early on.
Beginner Script
I'm going to get 5 nos today. That's the goal.
Curiosity beats confidence.
New salespeople try to project confidence. Great salespeople ask questions. The more curious you are about a prospect's world, the more naturally the right words come — and the more trust you build without trying.
Beginner Script
What's the biggest challenge your team is facing right now?
Rejection is feedback.
Write down why you lost every deal. Not to beat yourself up — to find the pattern. Most beginners lose for the same 2–3 reasons repeatedly. Identifying them is the fastest path to improvement.
Beginner Script
[After a no] Would you be willing to tell me one thing I could have done better?
Study your product until you can explain it in one sentence.
If you can't explain what you sell in under 10 seconds, you haven't learned it yet. Confusion kills deals before they start. Practise the one-sentence version until it's automatic.
Beginner Script
We help [persona] [achieve outcome] without [common pain].
Know your numbers.
Pipeline × conversion rate = forecast. Track both weekly. If you don't know your numbers, you're driving blind. Top reps know exactly how many dials, demos, and proposals they need to hit their quota.
Beginner Script
This week I need [X] dials to get [Y] conversations to book [Z] demos.
Section 2: Prospecting
Tips 6–10Always be prospecting — even when your pipeline looks full.
A full pipeline today does not mean a full pipeline in 90 days. The reps who hit quota consistently are always planting seeds — even when they're busy closing. Prospecting is a habit, not an event.
Beginner Script
Hi [Name], saw you just [trigger event] — wanted to reach out.
Personalise the first line of every cold email.
Generic openers get deleted. A single line that references something specific — a post, a job change, a press release — signals that you did your homework. It takes 60 seconds and dramatically increases reply rates.
Beginner Script
Noticed your team expanded into [market] — curious how you're handling [challenge].
Follow up 5–7 times before giving up.
Most deals close on the 5th touch. Most reps give up after 2. Persistence — when done politely — is not annoying. It's professional. A simple bump email takes 10 seconds and keeps you top of mind.
Beginner Script
Just bumping this up — happy to connect for 10 minutes this week?
Use LinkedIn to research before every call.
Know their role, tenure, and recent activity before you dial. Referencing something real shows you're not cold-calling blind — it immediately separates you from the 99% of reps who don't bother.
Beginner Script
I saw you posted about [topic] — wanted to get your take.
Ask every customer for one referral.
Warm intros convert 3× better than cold outreach. Most salespeople are too shy to ask. A simple ask at the end of a successful call — or after a win — is one of the highest-ROI moves a new rep can make.
Beginner Script
Is there one other person in your network who's dealing with the same challenge?
Section 3: Discovery & Demo
Tips 11–15Ask the pain question first.
Don't pitch until you know the problem. The biggest mistake beginners make is jumping into a demo before they understand what the prospect actually needs. Ask first. Always.
Beginner Script
Before I show you anything, help me understand — what's not working right now?
Quantify the pain.
"How much is that costing you?" is the single most powerful question in sales. If a prospect can't quantify the pain, they won't feel urgency to fix it. Help them put a number on it — it changes the conversation from nice-to-have to need-to-have.
Beginner Script
If you could solve that problem, what would that be worth to the business?
Confirm decision makers early.
Don't pitch to the wrong person. Find out who signs the cheque and who can kill the deal before you invest time building out a proposal. The earlier you know, the less time you waste.
Beginner Script
Who else would be involved in a decision like this?
Demo the solution to the problem — not every feature.
No one wants a feature tour. They want to see the specific thing that solves their specific problem. Reference what they told you in discovery and show only what's relevant.
Beginner Script
Based on what you told me, let me show you the one thing that solves that.
End every demo with a next step.
No vague "I'll follow up." Get a specific commitment before you leave the call. The next step should be concrete — a time, a date, a decision. Ambiguity is where deals go to die.
Beginner Script
Can we put 30 minutes in the calendar for Thursday to go through pricing?
Section 4: Closing & Follow-Up
Tips 16–20Ask for the business directly.
Most beginners hint at wanting the deal. They say things like "let me know when you're ready" or "I'll send something over." Closers ask. Directly. It feels uncomfortable at first — but it's the most respectful thing you can do.
Beginner Script
Are you ready to move forward?
Handle objections with questions, not answers.
When a prospect raises an objection, the instinct is to defend your product. Don't. Respond with curiosity. Ask what's behind the objection — the real blocker is usually different from the surface one.
Beginner Script
That's fair — what would need to be true for this to be a yes?
Use silence.
After you ask a closing question, stop talking. Whoever speaks first loses. New reps fill silence with backtracking and discounting. Train yourself to sit in it. Silence means they're thinking — and thinking means they're serious.
Beginner Script
[Ask the closing question. Then say nothing. Count to 10 in your head.]
Send a proposal recap email within 1 hour of every meeting.
Memory fades fast. A clean recap email that summarises what was discussed, what you'd recommend, and the clear next step keeps momentum alive and shows professionalism. Most reps don't do this — which makes you stand out every time you do.
Beginner Script
Here's what we discussed, what I'd recommend, and next steps.
Win or lose, ask for feedback.
It's the fastest way to improve. Winning without understanding why is lucky. Losing without understanding why is a pattern. A 2-minute debrief call — even after a no — gives you data most reps never get.
Beginner Script
Whatever you decide, I'd love 2 minutes of honest feedback — what was the deciding factor?
